LITTLE WORDS FOR THESSALONIKI the Land of Alexander The Great

Thessaloniki also known as Thessalonica is the second-largest city in Greece, with slightly over one million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, and the capital of the geographic region of Macedonia, the administrative region of Central Macedonia                                                 It is also known in Greek as   "the co-capital"or "co-reigning" city of the Byzantine Empire  alongside Constantinople.
Thessaloniki is located on the Thermaic Gulf, at the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea.                The municipality of Thessaloniki, the historical centre, AND  metropolitan area had 1,006,112 inhabitants and the greater region had 1,092,919. It is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for Greece and southeastern Europe, notably through the Port of Thessaloniki. The city is renowned for its festivals, events and vibrant cultural life in general.[12] Events such as the Thessaloniki International Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival are held annually. Thessaloniki was the 2014 European Youth Capital. The city's main university, Aristotle University, is the largest in Greece and the Balkans.
The city was founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, who named it after his wife Thessalonike, daughter of Philip II of Macedon and sister of Alexander the Great. It was built 40 km southeast of Pella, the capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia. An important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1430 and remained an important seaport and multi-ethnic metropolis during the nearly five centuries of Turkish rule, with churches, mosques, and synagogues co-existing side by side.                                                        From the 16th to the 20th century it was the only Jewish-majority city in Europe.                                                          It passed from the Ottoman Empire to the Kingdom of Greece on 8 November 1912.                                     Thessaloniki exhibits Byzantine architecture, including numerous Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, a World Heritage Site, and several RomanOttoman and Sephardic Jewish structures.
In 2013, National Geographic Magazine included Thessaloniki in its top tourist destinations worldwide, while in 2014 Financial Times  declared Thessaloniki as the best mid-sized European city of the future for human capital and lifestyle.

Thessaloniki will be one of the 140 CITIES THAT WILL HAVE the more modern metro underground starting  on 30 NOVEMBRE 2024

The White Tower of Thessaloniki

is a monument and museum on the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki,        capital of the region of Macedonia in northern Greece

The present tower replaced an old Byzantine fortification, known to have been mentioned around the 12th century, that the Ottoman Empire reconstructed to fortify the city's fortress some time after Sultan Murad II captured Thessaloniki in 1430.

During the period of Ottoman rule, the tower became a notorious prison and the scene of numerous mass executions, most famously of the Janissaries who revolted during the reign of Mahmud II.

In 1912, as Greece gained control over the city, and the White Tower was substantially remodeled and its exterior was whitewashed. White Tower has been adopted as the symbol of the city.

THE STORY OF UMBRELLAS BY George Zongolopoulos

The Umbrellas is a popular public art installation in the heart of Thessaloniki, Greece. Created by the Greek artist George Zongolopoulos, this captivating masterpiece was introduced to the public in 1997, becoming an integral part of the city’s artistic and cultural fabric. Positioned along the city’s waterfront promenade at the Nea Paralia area, The Umbrellas stands out as a symbol of Thessaloniki’s embrace of modern art and its deep-rooted appreciation for culture.

Known for its distinctive design, The Umbrellas features 21 vibrant, umbrella-like structures made of stainless steel. While primarily serving as a visual treat, these sculptures offer shade and shelter to visitors, making the site a favourite spot for locals and tourists. The installation’s captivating aesthetics, combined with its seaside location, offer an ideal backdrop for photography, leisurely strolls, and relaxation.

To reach The Umbrellas from Thessaloniki’s Macedonia International Airport, visitors can take a taxi or a shuttle bus, which brings them straight to the city centre, near Aristotelous Square. From there, The Umbrellas is just a short walk along Nikis Avenue, the main road along the waterfront. Additionally, for those in other parts of the city or arriving via the railway or bus stations, a short taxi ride or a brisk walk from Aristotelous Square will lead directly to this iconic landmark.

CHURCH AGIOS DIMITRIOS

The church of Agios Dimitrios is dedicated to the patron Saint of the city and holds a prominent position among all the churches in this city.

The Church has a rich history.  Originally was built as a small chapel in 313 AD, on the ruins of an ancient Roman bath.
In the fifth century the Bishop Leontius reconstructed the small chapel to a large basilica. This church was burned somewhere between the 626 AD and 634 AD.  When it was constructed again took the form of a five-aisled basilica but in 1493 the Turkish invaders converted it into a mosque!  In 1912 the church returned to the Christians but the great fire in 1917 destroyed it completely.

The church commenced its holly service in 1949.

The church is located on the ruins of the Roman Forum and is a basilica with five naves, a transept and a vestibule.  It has a crypt located directly beneath the transept and the sanctuary. There are catacombs beneath the temple among which is the hall of the prison of St. Demetrius.  The church has a museum and three chapels on one side.  On the southeast side of the church there is the small chapell of Agios Efthimios.

The church Agios Dimitrios before the devastating fires of 1917 was decorated with sculptures, frescoes and mosaics, most of which were destroyed and today only a few remnants can tell the glorious past of the monument.
